Balance is something you create and naturopathic nutrition can help

A moment in time and 6 weeks of Summer are stretching out ahead - the lure of THE Summer holiday versus the grim reality of the childcare juggle once you get home.

I have convincingly renamed myself Thomas taxis 344 (got a certain ring to it I feel) as I’m so often in my car ferrying teens to various social commitments.

In another moment, the realisation that Summer is most definitely over.

Children head back to school and Uni (not necessarily a bad thing right?) and it’s time to get back on that hamster wheel. The move from the less structured Summer months to something more routine based can be overwhelming and comforting all rolled into one.

Feedback from my clients suggests that what we are all searching for is better balance in our lives. It is this balance that allows us to steer our ship in the increasingly stormy seas of the midlife years.

So how do we achieve this?

Take time to ask yourself these questions:

Are you productive, yet take time for yourself?
Do you understand the importance of down-time and restorative, restful sleep?

Productivity is key in order to progress in all areas of our lives. But the importance of setting boundaries, taking part in things that bring you joy and prioritising sleep should never be underestimated.

Do you exercise to the extent that you never give yourself a rest day?
Do you fail to exercise at all?

Whilst staying active is essential for maintaining muscle mass, flexibility and overall wellbeing, it’s imperative to balance intense periods of exercise with restorative practices. Over-exercising in midlife can exacerbate symptoms of burnout, increase an already overflowing stress bucket and exacerbate old (and new) injuries. Conversely, understanding the importance of daily movement in midlife is key to a long and productive life.

Do you prioritise self-care or do you always meet the needs of others first?

"You cannot be of maximum service to others unless you take care of yourself "– ‘Rich Roll’.

Enough said.

Do you prioritise nutrition, placing emphasis on healthier food choices and quality homemade food whilst allowing yourself occasional guilt-free treats?

Life is for living….eat the goddamn cake…

just maybe not the whole cake! Understand why you make the food choices that you make and try and do things a little differently. Your body will thank you for it.

Do you drink to excess or make sensible informed decisions regarding alcohol consumption?

If you can’t drink alcohol in the way that you used to then your body is trying to tell you that for a reason. Enjoy that glass of wine but understand the decisions that you make around drinking and try and do things a little differently.

Are you happy to take risks or prefer to always be in the comfortable zone?

There’s nothing wrong with comfortable but taking risks is what allows us to grow and keeps the fire burning in our belly.

Are you an all or nothing kind of person?

It’s not necessary to be either, somewhere in between is just perfect!

Take the time to ask yourself these questions and trust your gut. Thriving in midlife is all about balance so don't be scared to dig deep and re-evaluate.

Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.
